Community Philanthropy and Contributions 

For more than a decade, Heritage Hotels and Resorts has been actively involved in cultural causes and community partnerships and endeavors. As such it has emerged as a leading cultural entrepreneur in the State of New Mexico. The Company's focus in each of its hotel projects is to express the historic aspects of New Mexico's unique cultures to provide guests an authentic experience. Culturally related projects

  • Reestablished the historic Montezuma Ball (a territorial event begun in 1902 written by then-territorial governor Lew Wallace and writer of "Ben Hur"). Proceeds from this event have raised over $2MM to support NM charities.
  • Established Heritage Cultural Event Series at Lodge at Santa Fe
  • Development of various retail stores featuring traditional New Mexico products
  • Establishment of New Mexico Multi-Cultural Foundation (NMMCF)
  • Renovation of historic Raul D. Dominguez garden at UNM Zimmerman Library
  • Major sponsorship of Style New Mexico, an event recognizing NM top artisans
  • Preservation of Bugg family holiday light display by NMMCF
  • Provided financial support for Casa San Isidro to avoid closure
  • Major Sponsorship support of Santa Fe's International Folk Art Market
  • Creation of Heritage musical CDs featuring New Mexican musicians
  • Selection and transfer of Bugg family holiday light display to Menaul School
  • Significant contribution for KiMo Theater programming initiatives for the purpose of revitalizing the downtown Albuquerque area and bringing this historic and iconic building into a more significant role in the city's cultural offerings. Formed and led the Friends of the KiMo Foundation.
  • Contribution of funds for the publishing of the The Plazas of New Mexico book, by Chris Wilson, Stephanos Polyzoides and Miguel Gandert
  • Involvement in Spanish Colonial Museum Foundation

Large scale and other endeavors

  • Renovation and conversion of all hotels within the Heritage Hotels & Resorts' portfolio from homogenous franchised hotels to independent cultural expressions of their regions utilizing local artisans and crafts persons and partnering with local museums to execute these plans
  • Pledging a portion of room revenue from all hotels to various cultural non-profits and initiatives
  • Significant donation to the UNM Architecture School designed by Antoine Predock
  • Establishment of five (5) annual Heritage Scholarships at UNM architecture school
  • Orchestrated a multi-million pledge commitment to launch a 10-year initiative to make the UNM architecture school the top program in the US in regional design and planning.
  • Heritage Hotels and Resorts named US Department of Commerce minority retailer of the year in 2006
  • Board participation in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces Convention and Visitors' Bureaus, Chambers of Commerce, Museum Foundations, Spanish Colonial Society, involvement with State Department of Tourism, Marketing & Advertising Associations and more.
